The way things were looking now- the straits were more like the Tundra than the usual muddy mess. Mud had frozen over and a nice pile of snow had built up along the path and the grass. Sadly this didn’t necessarily make things any easier. Sure, sure, his boots weren’t getting sucked into mud that might as well be reclassified as quicksand, but he didn’t exactly own snowshoes and the thick coat he was wearing killed a lot of his movement.

And his vision.

Iarla tugged the hood back a bit, relying on his scarf to keep his face warm, just so he could keep his peripherals clear. Sure, a lot of things would be too cold to bother, but they’d also be hungry and…

Well he hardly wanted to become a Luxray’s lunch.

Bridget led the way, jumping through the snow and enjoying the way it slightly melted at her touch. Every few minutes she’d pause, ears twisting, and Iarla’s heart would stop.

But there wasn’t anything there.

WILD ROAR APPEARS!

Something out in the silence is angry but who in the world would have angered such a dangerous beast?

Procella wasn’t known for being a loud place, not like the smog filled streets of Uberrime where it was nothing but the stink of noise created by too many people jammed into one place and left to cultivate a symphony only worthy of a city in its prime. The quiet in Straits this cold winter day, however, was smothering and abusive as the wilderness of the grasslands were nothing without the continual rain or thunder made by storm or beast. Occasionally the rolling dark and foreboding clouds would produce something of a sputter, either in freezing rain or the light dusting of snow. Otherwise it was just an unusual bitter cold, all of which absorbed every bit of sound for miles, muffling the far away cries into distant, flat sounds that caused hair to stand on end as they broke through the silence.

However nothing was like the sound that broke through near the man with the little Litleo. It was a ferocious roar, a strong bellow that tore through the quiet prairie and took up too much space, expanding too quickly until it echoed through the snowy wasteland. It was a sound that no animal had heard in this area before, something alien and unnerving as a new predator was introduced into the landscape. As a result the thick and rapid fluttering of swift feathers could be heard as a flock of Spearow took off over the man’s head, soundless in their calls but well-known in their desires to flee.

As the silence settled into an uneven place between fear and awe a scream, guttural and high pitch followed suit. It was thoroughly human and no doubt one that was injured. The scream gave a better location than the roar, just beyond a ring of rocks, private from the narrow paths well tread upon by those that passed through Procella, animals and human alike. The silence continued to be jaggedly stabbed through with curses and threats, venom on fangs within the words themselves. They didn’t float on the breeze more as moved with the predatory movements of a nesting Skarmory, sliding themselves around rocks that had likely once been home to the well known Electric Lions that roamed this land, although once home could easily have been current home given enough time watching the area.

Both Iarla and Bridget froze like little deerlings in headlights. The Litleo’s ears quickly flattened and Iarla felt his entire skin shudder as every hair on his body decided now was the time to prickle and straighten. He flinched as other creatures took off, jealous of their ability to get above the danger.

It was the more human-like scream that snapped Iarla out of his frozen daze and he cautiously began moving forward, Bridget taking the back. Her pupils had dilated even in the bright snowy landscape, much as it would probably hurt later.

Just one foot after the other… each sinking and crunching into the soft snow and making his movements jerky.

He eyed the rocks, trying to catalog every detail. It was a delaying tactic, but one that sometimes came in handy. He couldn’t see anything or anyone even as the words continued to stream out. He finally laid a gloved hand on the cool stone and peered around it, trying to keep his breathing under control. The scarf absorbed most of the steam before it could float away. Bridget pressed up against his leg and kept her eyes on the back, ears only occasionally twitching from where they still lay flat.

WILD DRUDDIGON APPEARS!

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

The beast was as spiny as it was large, its scales the blue of a pristine pool of water hidden away in some magical place only to clash with the ruddy angry red of a nose whose blood vessels have burst in the cold weather. Compared to the ice and snow of its surroundings it was shocking how it was not noticed sooner as it towered over the small ring of rocks by at least four feet with its head alone was the size of a small boulder, its teeth a small handspan and sharp enough to shred through anything in its way. Long arms that were perfect for grabbing prey had their massive and sharp claws clipped back to painful and rounded stumps, useless for rendering whatever it attacked to ribbons but still good enough at bludgeoning that it slammed the man trying to hold it still off his feet.

The man was smart enough to not let go of the catch pole that held that was meant to control the Pokemon, even if it was done futilely. The collar that was affixed to the pole was like that of a medieval torture device with a modern twist. It was steel, or some similar metal of a stronger quality, with long teeth that dug and bit into the rough skin of the Druddigon yet were the ancient technology ended the new began as the teeth were coated in frost and a device at the end of the pole seemed to be the culprit. While it upset the dragon tremendously it did seem to keep it back, at least whenever the man had a button pressed on the pole. Otherwise it was prone to biting, as all angry animals were apt to do.

The dragon saw the man first and snarled low but perhaps only in sensing his fear. While the beast would not be able to know right away that this man was here to help didn’t matter to the furious drake. It was another threat, another person to tie its mouth up and put it in such a horrible device and parade it around a town that stank of rot and poison. Druddigon was done playing victim to a disgusting worm that had no place even laying eyes on its majesty. Turning back to the man still on the ground it roared loudly and tried to get the last laugh by tearing into its belly.

WILD POACHER APPEARS!

Its not uncommon for Poachers to use live Pokemon as bait, or worse, when it comes to dealing with larger predators. "Unfortunately" not all predators can be swayed.

Red jaws came swiftly for him and the first thing he could think of was letting go of the pole but he fought the urge by turning up collar’s frigid temperatures to new extremes. It seemed to work as the beast got the idea and reared back instead of finishing its first idea. Idiot could have had it all if it had just kept going, he thought to himself as he raised to his feet, aided by the pull of the device as the creature reared to full height.

It hadn’t always been like this. At least he hadn’t always been this sloppy. He’d trained dragons in the past perfect for the right trainer with the taste of something bloodthirsty enough to kill a man but smart enough to know how to follow rules without having to be attached to a leash 24/7. Problem was, he usually started with tykes, not full grown monsters hungry for destruction, especially not ones so large. He’d never known when to not talk up his skills or when to not show off in front of a beautiful, and rich, lady who was now expecting the biggest dragon with the brightest scales on her doorstep. That should be easy, right?

Well the matter of finding the beast had been the hard part but the Deluge had always been a great place to steal from if you knew how. Getting it to Procella had been relatively easy too so how hard could the rest be? It wasn’t until he made the fatal mistake of taking the muzzle off to feed the fucking thing that it caused problems. Someone looking in, and likely laughing, into his affairs, it wasn’t hard to know the creature would have rathered make him lunch than eat a few lifeless slabs of meat, it just hadn’t caught up to him until the moment the dragon bit into his arm.

How he had gotten the dragon to let go of his arm without ripping any meat off was lost to him. He imagined it was how he did all things right now and simply tortured the drake with the collar around its neck but the memory hadn’t been important, at least not yet. Nor had the realization that the Druddigon had seen something outside the stones. All he was thinking of was chaining up the dragon so he could at least let go of this pole long enough to try dinner option number two, the live Meowth he had brought with him from Piscari. Either way he had to be careful, this menace had it out to get him and a wrong step would see him without a head like the scene where the Tyrantrum in Jurassic Park pulled the man clear off the toilet.

Now that he was thinking about it. The Druddigon was just as big.

“Sweet merciful spirits,” he muttered under his breath in awe. And terror. Had he been a bit closer to the dragon he probably would have pissed himself. Of course the collar caught his attention rather quickly, along with the injured poacher trying to foolishly tame the thing. “Bridget, we’re going around.” He wanted to get behind the poacher before the man saw him. Granted, then the Druddigon would be free to attack them both but…

Actually if he forced the man to either let the dragon go or try to fight him while holding onto it, he might have an advantage. Though he didn’t like the idea of the poor thing being stuck in that trap and iced.

Oi, this was too much thinking, he wasn’t good at strategizing for this sort of thing.

“Aim an ember at his hands, when you’ve got a clean shot,” he whispered down to the Litleo, hoping the Druddigon’s roars and struggles would keep him from being overheard.

Bridget had frozen at the sight of the dragon but she steeled herself and let Iarla hoist her up until she had to scramble her way up the icy rock, claws digging into the stone. It put her scarily close to the Druddigon’s height and thus its mouth, but she was a Ranger too! By proxy. She was brave. With her extra height, she let out a small cry and puffed out a flame at the Poachers hands and the end of the pole. In the meantime, Iarla slid around the boulder, dropping his heavy pack and getting ready to tackle the man himself. Hopefully to both get him away from the Druddigon if it decided to use it’s new found freedom to eat him and to prevent the man from retaliating.

He was just was just getting ready to “shock” the beast again when he had the shock of his life. The small fireball connected with his hand and while he knew in his head not to let go of the stick his body disobeyed and let the stick go swinging. The Poacher swore loudly and scrambled backwards, nearly slipping on the snow and ice, not gutsy enough to get close enough to the beast to take it back. Not as it swung between two arms that would easily grapple him and tear him to bits.

He had been smart, more likely lucky, to back the best into the U of the rocks rather than let it block the opening. The Poacher could run where he wanted, but he knew for a fact with this beast out and about there was no running. It would only be a matter of seconds before he was caught and devoured.

Taking his eyes off the murderous beast in front of him was suicidal but he couldn’t help but spare a quick glance, seeing a man in a Ranger coat but not seeing the source of the the fireball. Well Fuck.

“You’ve fucked over us both! I hope you know that!” Slowly he reached for his own Pokeballs, ready to send out one of his Pokemon to deal with the situation. “It’ll kill anyone in its path.

WILD DRUDDIGON APPEARS!

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

The dragon snarled as he looked at the man, taking two steps forward. It crushed the dish of meat, the slabs squelching under its large foot. In the process it crushed the front half of the trap holding the Meowth that now cried out in fear, over and over again. It seemed to care little for its plight or the presence of the man who rescued it. There was only one thing to have in mind. Only one thing worth doing anything about.

As it stalked toward the man who was surprisingly keeping his ground, the Druddigon used one of its mighty hands to wedge under the collar and pull. The teeth sank in viciously, prodding into and through the rough skin until a thick purple ooze left the wound, steaming in the could as it cooled. As it refused to break, the dragon let out a fierce and mighty roar, as if to demand action to be done but the Poacher could do nothing but bark out a laugh.

“You’ll eat me the second that's off. I won’t be playing your games!”

“Well then I’ll make sure I’m nae in its path!” Iarla shot back, though he was keeping the stone between him and the druddigon. Most Pokemon would rather run than fight when given the opportunity, but he needed to get it out of that trap first. Plus, well, it was rather angry. He hoped its anger didn’t extend to him.

He took in a deep breath and let it out shakily.

From a distance, Bridget kept her eyes locked on the poacher and shot out another ember once she saw him reach for a pokeball. She resisted the urge to growl, surprised he still hadn’t noticed her yet, but it’d be smart to keep it that way. It took a lot of thought to force her tail still and not wag it around irritatingly.

Iarla’s eyes shot worriedly out to the meowth, wondering if he should risk catching it just to keep it safe from the carnage. The dragon could step on it by accident and Iarla wouldn’t be able to handle that. Hell, if that meowth died he might just let the druddigon eat the poacher.

His gaze was torn from the dragon’s feet and to the poacher for a moment and decided he was going to have to go for it. He waited, deciding in a split second when the druddigon’s tail would be out of the way before he ran out behind it and dove for the meowth’s cage, practically melting at the sound of it’s crying. “Don’t worry, love, I’ll get you out of there.”

He only had a pair of gloves on and his belt knife, and that knife wasn’t going to make the meowth feel better, but he jammed it into the trap and tried to pry it open.

WILD POACHER APPEARS!

Its not uncommon for Poachers to use live Pokemon as bait, or worse, when it comes to dealing with larger predators. "Unfortunately" not all predators can be swayed.

As he pulled the Pokeball from his belt he hadn’t been expecting a lot bolt of fire to streak across the frozen wasteland but after the first he should have been ready sooner. The ball was dropped and rolled weakly across the grass. The poacher cursed loudly, holding his twice burnt hand to his chest. “You’re not even letting me defend myself! You’re a sick fucking Ranger if you expect me to get eaten by this thing because that’s what is going to happen!”

He stumbled backwards, trying yet again to pull a second Pokeball from his belt, this time trying to shield himself by turning away from the unknown source but keeping a cautious eye on the dragon in front of him. Turning his back was too deadly but he needed to defend himself somehow and while he could only turn away slightly he hoped whatever was blasting him with fire would miss, or at least hit his hip or back. It would hurt just as badly but if he could keep hold of a Pokeball long enough to release a Pokemon he would have something to contend with the Druddigon and keep himself alive with even the possibility of recapturing the Druddigon or at least doing away with it.

Dragon hide was rather popular and there were plenty of other Dragons in the sea.

WILD TRAP APPEARS!

Trapping is a old practice in Ho'ohiki with the act still being legal in some parts of the island. However not all trappers are the same just like not all traps are equal.

The trap was once a long and rectangular cage, easy to stuff things inside manually or trick small Pokemon into entering with no way of escaping without the help of someone with thumbs from the outside. It made it incredibly popular among people seeking to catch pests humanely or to be used by Poachers, usually with the idea of stuffing too many Pokemon from other traps into its confines to be carried easily from one place to another. Or to carry around a Meowth as the perfect treat for a hangry Druddigon.

The mechanism in which the animal had been pushed through had been thoroughly smashed flat leaving only a small amount of space for the cat to press against what was the opening that was rusted shut, leaving the Poacher to use the trap mechanism as the only way to retrieve the frightened animals inside until now. A belt knife, however, made quick work of the rusted door, edging it open enough for the Meowth to reach through the square holes of the door at the man’s gloved hands and cry more rapidly. It would only take a hearty pull to open the door, perhaps a bit more leverage of the knife but for all intents and purposes the door was open.

WILD DRUDDIGON APPEARS!

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

The Druddigon continued to stalk forward, causing the man to rapidly scramble backwards. Luck would smile on the Pokeball as it simply kissed the side of the Pokemon’s large feet. “You will not get away from me. I will exact my revenge. Now. Remove this collar.” He snarled, lowering her head to level with the Poacher’s snapping his jaw to remind him just exactly who and what he was dealing with.

The Poacher, being unable to understand and being unwilling to remove the collar just took this as a moment to scramble backward even further. “Get away from me! Ranger if you don’t do something this thing will eat me and it will be blood on your hands!” He yelled over the low guttural snarl that left the Druddigon’s throat.

“Maybe ye shouldn’t have put yerself in the line of fire in the first place,” Iarla muttered not particularly caring to do more than glance back at the poacher to make sure the Druddigon wasn’t changing it’s focus. The desperate cries from the cage were breaking his heart and making him a little less sympathetic to the poacher’s plight. He yanked at the cage with another mighty heave before pulling out a single pokeball from his belt. “Sorry, love, but yer in the way.” He tapped it to whatever part of the meowth he could reach.

Bridget squirmed, losing her angle from her position and unsure if she should try and skid around the icy rock circle. She knew better than to jump down, those big feet would squash her in a minute. She stretched out her legs, butt wriggling for a moment before she leapt for the next rock and dug in her claws. It took a few more jumps, but she could at least see what the poacher was doing even if she couldn’t do anything about it.

Through it, her ears pricked up at the Druddigon’s words and she bemoaned the fact that Iarla couldn’t understand either of them. At least it didn’t sound like the dragon was going to turn his wrath on her partner. She hovered uncertainty from above, glancing down at him.

But Iarla could hear the poacher screeching. “Well maybe ye should of have thought of that before ye got into th'business. I’m more on it’s side than yers!” He still had the knife out. There was no way he’d actually stab the man but the poacher wouldn’t know that. “If ye free the dragon, there’s a chance ye’ll be able to run off into the sunset!”

Iarla wasn’t sure how much he actually believed that, but maybe the druddigon would prefer an easy way out over carnage.

Still, he hugged the wall and scooted around, trying not to consider the fact that he was now also putting himself in the line of fire.

WILD POACHER APPEARS!

Its not uncommon for Poachers to use live Pokemon as bait, or worse, when it comes to dealing with larger predators. "Unfortunately" not all predators can be swayed.

“God dammit” He hated himself for this but as the dragon lowered his head with its snarls, a clear gesture in a demand to remove what was around its neck, and the Ranger enticing suggestion that perhaps it would let him go free if he just freed it, the Poacher went against his better judgement and took the hefty key from a pocket that looked like it weighed more than your average padlock and then some.

Reaching up slowly, not to make his movements too fast and have the drake or fire spitter believe he was doing something shady, and went about unlocking the collar. It took a moment, his hands shaking from the idea that this could very well backfire but it was his only choice. The Ranger wasn’t exactly going to save him and if he refused one more time he was definitely going to end up on the dinner menu.

The collar finally unlatched from its two locks and the Poacher pushed it open a foot, causing it to go slack around the Druddigon’s neck. “There. See? You’re free! Now-”

WILD DRUDDIGON APPEARS!

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

Contains the Following: Blood, Extreme Gore, Death, & Violence

As the man spoke the beast took cautionary steps back but the moment she was at a good distance and while the Poacher was mid-speech, massive dragon threw its open jaws over the top of the man who wronged him and bit down. There were screams, muffled by both the dragon’s mouth and the cold snowy landscape. Crushing down farther the Druddigon grabbed one of the man’s legs in his blunted claws and began to pull.

It was easy with tooth and strength to sever the man into edible bits, pulling the man apart like a child might a fly. Blood added to the dragon’s won crimson scales and slowly billowed steam as it hit the frigid air. Large chunks were digested whole, occasionally thrown in the air as if an act of playfulness always caught and gobbled down quickly. The gorey mess in front of him was that of a horrific crime scene all the while its collar hung around its neck.

As it finished, leaving bone and the occasional limb to be taken on by scavengers, the Druddigon turned slowly to face the man who had caused his swift freedom. Catching eye with him she slowly approached out of interest and demand. “Finish it.” She lowered her head to the man, this time with his chin nearly touching the ground as an obvious statement of demand a human should be able to know. Sure the Druddigon could tear the collar off but it would tear at its brilliant scales and they would have none of that.

She would not eat this man as a sign of thanks but there were some benefits in scaring them. Namely the fact that it was very funny to him. Yet until this man did as she asked she did not know the measure of him and just how long he would be kept alive.

Bridget yowled and Iarla slammed his eyes shut for all of a moment as the first bite went down. He forced them back open again, terrified he’d be the next lunch despite his help. “Oh Celebi, thats…”

Shit, he should have let the man defend himself, should have let him run. What right did he have to force this man to his death, accident or not? He was not Yveltal or Xerneas. His hands were shaking, eyes burning, but he managed to only take one cautious step back when the Druddigon turned to look him dead in the eye.

He glanced at Bridget as she darted across the top of the rocks to get closer to him. She didn’t seem more than mildly annoyed- certainly not terrified. Iarla took a breath, swallowed, before approaching the Druddigon from the side of it’s head and working at the last pieces of metal. His hands were still shaking. “You’ll be free in just a moment there, alright?”

He accidentally brushed his hands against scale when he worked, hissing slightly as the sandpapery skin scraped at him. “You’ll be fine, everything’s fine,” he muttered to himself, more reassurances for the one human left than the dragon.

WILD DRUDDIGON APPEARS!

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

Contains the Following: Blood

The Druddigon stood still, blood dribbling of its chin in slow, lazy rivulets. It huffed at the human’s fear but found it pleasant. At least this one was eager to do as she asked, unlike the one who trapped him. She licked his chops once to get rid of an annoying drip but kept his eyes latched on the man’s. It would create more fear but it was something she cared little in.

Grateful was something odd to him when it came to humans. In the Deluge humans were hated and the Druddigon felt kinship with his fellow dragons in hating them. Why should she feel different? Especially when one of them comes and captures him only to try and torture him into compliance. And yet this human, or more accurately this human’s Pokemon, helped set him free.

“Tell me, little cat, is this man to be trusted?”

Iarla swallowed thickly when he saw the tongue move. He let out an even breath through his nose and just focused on working the last bit of the lock off the collar. Amazingly, he only twitched a little bit when the dragon ‘spoke’.

Bridget fur raised a bit at the ‘little cat’ comment, but she sat her butt down and tilted her chin downwards. It was rather nice to be towering over everything on her rock. "Of course! He’s a medic, he does nothing but help people even when they don’t deserve it. She knew Iarla would be taking the dead of the poacher harder once he had time to let it sink in, but she didn't care much. The man could have lived if he hadn’t been an idiot. “If you can trust anyone, it’d be him.”

Iarla’s gaze flickered to Bridget as she mewed and meowed in what was an obvious attempt to communicate. The rest of the metal slid through his fingers and it was just a manner of tossing a portion of the metal to the other side of the Druddigon’s neck, so all he had to do was sit up. Though he made sure to verbally warn him first. “Just tossing this open, alright? No need to be alarmed,” his voice squeaked on the ‘ee’.

The red skin on its face is harder than rock. In narrow caves, it squares off against its enemies and charges face-first right into them.

Her gaze dug deeply into the man in front of her. She stayed absolutely still as he prepared to remove the device around her neck. There was no other reason to do anything else, especially with him so close to finishing the job at hand. She needed this thing removed, and then she could figure out just what to do with her new surroundings.

Still, as the feline spoke she slowly cocked her head at the man. “If he helps people who did not deserve it… then why was he so keen on letting that man die? He certainly did not help him,” She asked, what could have been a chuckle in her voice if it wasn’t for her deep, brass guttural tones.

The drake’s gaze narrowed and she lowered herself more so so the man could have a better chance at removing the damn collar. If this man really was trustworthy then she would let him live or perhaps force him to take her toward the Deluge and her home. Still there was something within her that wanted to thank him for his assistance with something else, or in the very least assist him more… lethally in dealing with the problems with these Poachers.

He didn't expect you to kill the man when the idiot had finally realized he had to free you.” Bridget figured the poacher’s demise actually made today's work easier. It certainly meant no repeat offenses, which while dark was the bit of silver lining to criminal deaths. “Iarla’s soft in a lot of ways.” Though she sounded fond when she said it.

It might have been too big of a risk, but the dragon seemed to at least understand that Iarla wasn't here to harm her.

But, quite honestly, he was doing this out of worry- not necessarily his own safety, mind, but that definitely played a factor. No, this dragon was likely from the Deluge and would need to trek that whole way back. Potential victims lay in her path or she'd be recaptured. Iarla couldn't let either happen.

But now that she was free of her chains, he needed to convince her to linger.

“I suppose you'll not be needing any food for your journey,” he said without humor. He still reached back to pull out the two poke snacks from his pack, offering them up in his hand and praying she wouldn't take his fingers with them.

Even Bridget stood up in worry.

You'll be heading towards the south, I'm guessing. To the Deluge?” Iarla swallowed, muscles tight. “How about you let me help you get there? We can prevent anymore… inconveniences as a group.”
